In 1998 there were just a handful of sites of the type that are now identified as weblogs (so named by Jorn Barger in December 1997). Jesse James Garrett, editor of Infosift,
began compiling a list of "other sites like his" as he found them in
his travels around the web. In November of that year, he sent that list
to Cameron Barrett. Cameron published the list on Camworld, and others maintaining similar sites began sending their URLs to him for inclusion on the list. Jesse's 'page of only weblogs' lists the 23 known to be in existence at the beginning of 1999.

Suddenly a community sprang up. It was easy to read all of the weblogs on Cameron's list, and most interested people did. Peter Merholz announced in early 1999 that he was going to pronounce it 'wee-blog' and inevitably this was shortened to 'blog' with the weblog editor referred to as a 'blogger.'

Im Dezember 1997 nannte Jorn Barger seine Website 'Weblog'. Während des folgenden Jahres sammelte Jesse James Garrett ähnliche Seiten, die er beim Surfen im Web fand, und Cameron Barrett veröffentlichte Jesse's 'page of only weblogs' Anfang 1999. Diese Liste enthielt 23 Blogs.

Damals gab es noch nicht die einfache Software wie heute, und ein Blogger musste sich recht gut mit Websitebau auskennen. Die Posts waren damals sehr kurz, eigentlich nur fast tägliche Hinweise auf andere Websites, Linksammlungen, gerichtet an Blogfreunde, die sich damals leicht zusammenfanden, als die später riesige Blogosphere noch am Entstehen war, viel persönliches Tagebuch.

Im Juli 1999 gab es das erste gratis Blog-Tool von Pitas, im August eröffnete Pyra Blogger, und die Blogs vermehrten sich explosionsartig. Die Online-Medien-Welt veränderte sich. Rebecca Blood glaubte schon im September 2000 "fest an die Macht der Weblogs, sowohl Leser als auch Schreiber von (passivem) Publikum zu (aktiver) Öffentlichkeit und von Konsumenten zu Kreativen zu transformieren." Sie sah, wie es sich ja bestätigt hat, "Weblogs als ein Gegenmittel zum abstumpfenden (crippling) Effect dieser Medien- (und Informationsdaten-) übersättigten Welt", und bloggt noch immer im alten Stil: In "Rebecca's Pocket" informiert sie ihre Leserschaft über Blogging und über interessante Bücher und online-Artikel, die man lesen sollte.
